Yoga Mentorship

Samatha Meditation 

Mondays | 5:15 pm to 6:30 pm | Ida Noyes 034 

September 15th through December 8th. Samatha means calm. Samatha meditation is a practice in the Buddhist tradition which cultivates calm concentration in preparation for insight to arise; this is a structured system of meditation practice which takes several weeks to learn. Classes include instruction and half-hour sitting practice, followed by a dhamma discussion.

Gentle Yoga

Tuesdays | 5:30 to 6:30 pm | Rockefeller

October 7th through December 2nd. Take an hour to find stillness within movement as we breathe, stretch, unwind and connect in deeply through gentle yoga, suitable for all levels of practice. 

Mindful Breath Community

Tuesdays | 6 to 7:15 pm | Ida Noyes 034

September 23rd through December 9th. Focus on supporting community and learn the art of living in harmony with one another and with the earth. The sessions include 30 minutes sitting and 10 minutes walking meditation, followed by sharing and discussion. All are welcome. 

Chan/Zen Meditation

Wednesdays | 5:30 pm to 6:40 pm | Rockefeller
October 1st through December 3rd. UChicago’s Buddhist Association’s weekly meditation. Half hour of sitting meditation, followed by an optional dharma teaching.

Insight Meditation Sangha

Thursdays | 6:30 pm to 8 pm | Bond
October 9th through December 4th. Insight meditation is based on the earliest teachings in Buddhism (the Pali Canon) and forms the basis for contemporary secular mindfulness practices. The group will meet weekly for 90 minutes, which will include instruction, practice and talks on key teachings on meditation and insight. The meditations focus on developing tranquility and Insight. The guiding teacher, Jon Aaron, has been teaching in the Insight tradition for over 20 years at New York Insight Meditation Center and is also a certified teacher of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction.

Rinzai Meditation

Sundays | 1 pm to 2 pm | Bond

Meditation Retreats

THE WORLD IS OUR PRACTICE: FINDING PRESENCE & PEACE IN THE MIDST OF IT ALL (Register here)

October 26th, February 8th, April 26th | 10 am to 4 pm | Bond
This daylong retreat will explore how meditation nurtures essential wisdom. Through guided sits, walking meditation, and dharma reflection, we will investigate how equanimity enables us to stay open-hearted and responsive without becoming overwhelmed, and how this quality benefits both our own liberation and our ability to serve others with clarity and compassion.

The Bells of Summer

Summer Sundays, June 22 to August 10 | 5 pm | Rockefeller Chapel 
Rockefeller Chapel’s 59th Annual Summer Carillon Concert Series. Come enjoy the beautiful sound of bells played by virtuoso carillonists from around the world. Bring a picnic and blanket or chairs.
